1,000 HOMELESS IN DELTA FLOOD
Story by:
John K. Uzor

At least 1,000
residents of Ughelli and environs in Delta State have become
homeless after flood took over 1,000 houses in the area. Report
shows that some houses in Ighagbomi, up Agbarho, Ogehenebrorhie
streets, Oduaran, post office road, pipeline, GRA and other area
have gone under the surface of water.
While some are commending the efforts of the state government in
trying to find a lasting solution to the flooding, some of the
victims and leaders of in Ughelli Kingdom however condemned the
non-chalant attitude of the council. One of the flood victims, Mr.
Frankline Ogbe, appealed to the state and the local government to
quickly intervene adding that the flood was dangerous to their
health and those of their families.
Two other victims, Mrs. Helen Apah and John Amudede both lamented
that the flood had ruined their business. They blamed some of the
problem on Setraco Nigeria Ltd., the construction company in charge
of the Ughelli township road declination project. Meanwhile the
supervisory councilor for environment in the Ughelli North Local
Government Area, Mr. Meshach Anuku, urged residents to stop dumping
of refuse and blocking of channels. While calling on the state and
the Federal Government to come to their add he however promised that
the council would do the best within its financial limit to find a
solution to the problem.
