NAFDAC Seals 3 ‘Pure Water’ Factories
Officials of NAFDAC yesterday sealed three table
water production centres in Aba, Abia State, for allegedly breaching
the law on safety standards.
NAFDAC Deputy Director Kehinde Mammudu told newsmen in Aba that the
affected centres were operating in unhygienic environment, and would
remain sealed until they met the minimum sanitation requirements.
“We recommend Good Hygiene Practice (GHP), and there is a minimal
requirement for such centres to produce any product for human
consumption,” he said.
Mammudu said the GHP required that such centres should be
hygienically clean, if they must function.
He said routine checks by the agency had helped to ensure compliance
with GHP, warning that some proprietors who often relapse to the old
unhygienic ways after registration, risked being de-registered.
Commenting on the production of bread in the area, Mammudu said the
agency’s recent laboratory analysis of randomly selected bakeries,
showed that they were 100 per cent free from the use of bromate.
He said bread produced in Aba and other parts of the state were
safe, and commended the master bakers for complying with the
agency’s directive against the use of bromate.
Mammudu said the agency also carried out several market inspections,
to ensure that traders complied with its directive on the sale of
iodised salt in small retail packs.
“We are highly impressed with the high compliance level in all the
markets in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia and other towns and villages,” he
added.
Mammudu said the agency recently impounded large quantity of
unregistered sex-enhancing drugs from Ariaria International Market
in Aba.
He urged the public to desist from using such unregistered drugs, to
safeguard their health.
